Why Winchester to Wantage?

This years event, organised by groups from Hyde900 in Winchester, and members of the Wantage Chamber of Commerce, to celebrate the history of King Alfred the Great and our two communities.

Our journey follows the story of his life, starting beneath Alfred’s statue in Wantage, his birthplace on the northern borders of Wessex. Crossing the Downs we pass near the site of Alfred’s first major victory over the Viking invaders – an event still celebrated annually in the Hocktide festival at Hungerford, further along our route. Entering Winchester, we pass Alfred’s final resting place in Hyde Abbey and finish the ride in the shadow of his statue in the heart of his capital city.

Yes, this year the W2W Ride is back to the original route: Wantage to Winchester. We start in Wantage at 10am on 16th July and head south to Winchester.

In between you get 53 miles of quiet country lanes along the Vale of the White Horse, over the Marlborough Downs, across the Thames valley, over the North Hampshire Downs then miles of easy cycling through the sleepy villages of the Bourne valley.

Advance entry is £15, with transport to the start costing an extra £22 (subject to availability).

Entry will be available on the day of the ride at Wantage marketplace - but only if spaces are still available. It will cost £18.
53 miles not enough?
For experienced cyclists from the Wantage area, get in contact and let us know if you would like to ride back from Winchester to Wantage, giving a total round trip of approximately 100 miles. This additional route will not be supported or signposted.
